for Almada Dance Company
Since I was a child, I had very present images that I watched on television, fascinated, made me aware of the winter customs of Trás-os-Montes. Those characters, devils, figures, masks, and rattles, always exerted a special magnetism on me. In the creation of this dance piece, I saw the opportunity to scenically explore the intersection of the ritual sacredness of these ancestral celebrations, with a contemporary dance language. Set between the sacred and the pagan, ancestral and contemporary, human and supernatural, “Inverno” (Winter) seeks to convey the magic that lives in those places at the time of the winter solstice, portraying the pulse of the earth, the emancipation of young people, the streets, the posture of transgression - but so ruled by fixed practices - and the strong cultural mysticism. This is a work about what is alive, but also about memory. About that and those who have already lived in the places we experience today.
